Uberlândia tests new heart implant

The Heart Institute of Triangulo Mineiro in Uberlândia, is among the centers that will participate in the research with a new device that unblocks blocked heart arteries by fat. The device under test is made of polymers, a material able to be absorbed by the body and which can prevent inflammation caused by metal models used so far.

According to the Director of the Heart Institute of Triangulo Mineiro, Roberto Botelho, the device is being studied since 1994 in Europe, but this year and in the fourth phase of testing, the device arrived in Brazil. "We must begin deployments later this month or in May. We are awaiting the arrival of devices, "he said.

Also according to the director, any person may be included in the list to deployment. "A person seeking any hospital and Uberlândia region and have a medical indication for the treatment of artery may seek to try to get on the list," he said.

In all, 70 centers around the world will participate in the research that will involve 15 patients per center. Therefore, only the first 15 people who seek the Institute and fit the criteria of quality can do the deployment.

In Brazil, besides the Heart Institute of Triangulo Mineiro in Uberlândia, Institute Dante Pazzanese and Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, will also participate in the research that will be conducted with 50 Brazilian.

According Botelho, the new implant as well as being reabsorbed by the body, decreases the amount of drug that the patient takes the blood to become less dense and makes it easier to evaluate a patient by CT, thus avoiding catheterization. "The device returns to normal circulation of the heart," he said.
The implant

The implant a stent, is a kind of spring through a catheter placed in the coronary artery, to open it. The prosthesis is a less aggressive than bypass. After six months, when the device has served its function, the new stent begins to be absorbed by the body, unlike the metal used today.
Catheterization in Uberlandia

From 1996 until now, the Heart Institute of Triangulo Mineiro has conducted 35,000 catheterization, with an annual average of 4000 procedures.

According to the director of the Heart Institute of the triangle Miner, Roberto Botelho are performed catheterization pro 15 months to treat heart attack. "The estimate is that 12 Uberlândia has infartes per day," he said.
